Dear Friends of SPSE,

We are pleased to inform you that we have extended the Call for Proposals for both the upcoming SPSE Conference and Symposium to October 1, 2021. Both meetings will take place virtually on November 5-6, 2021. Please see further information and instructions below.

We look forward to your submissions and hope to see many of you in November!

Call for Proposals / Conference + Symposium: Nov. 5-6, 2021 – VIRTUAL

A) Annual Conference:

The SPSE 2021 Program Committee invites philosophically oriented papers related to education in the widest sense for presentation at its Annual Conference. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • educational history and philosophy
  • critical theories and pedagogies
  • philosophies of teaching, learning and knowing
  • non-western philosophies of education
  • educational reform in theory and practice
  • social (re)construction and education
  • technology and education
  • evidence and assessment
  • disciplines and disciplinarity

B) Symposium:

As part of the meeting a symposium will be held around the theme “Education and the Event.” The notion of the event has become a significant idea in philosophy, especially within continental philosophy. To illustrate this claim one could, for example, mention Heidegger’s thinking of Ereignis, Badious four events of philosophy (politics, love, art, science), Derrida’s notion of the event as withdrawal and simultaneous irruption, and Deleuze’s thinking of the event as rhizomatic and continuous becoming, to name only a few instances of how the event has been conceptualized. In more general terms, an event is a happening, an occurrence, something unforeseen and unpredicted, it is, to put it differently, a performative, the event does something to us or the world around us. A disaster (natural or caused by us humans), two people falling in love, a new work of art, a scientific discovery, or to refer to the catastrophe that befell us in 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic, are all examples of an event, as we tend to speak of it in everyday language. When it comes to education, we can speak of pedagogical situations as events, of pedagogical encounters of facing the other, which give rise to the unexpected, and so to learning and transformation. Hence, an event is essentially that which we have no knowledge of before it happens – a thought which in itself has consequences for how we conceive of pedagogical situations and education more generally.

This symposium invites scholarly reflections on education and the event from diverse philosophical and educational perspectives and traditions. The aim is to shed light on the theme in such a way as to prepare for the possibility of the symposium, hopefully, becoming an event in its own right.
